First of all, all five Big Tech firms (Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, and Alphabet) have emerged as some of the world's most successful publicly traded companies, with entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates right at the top of the world's billionaire list.
These tech giants also have a front-and-centre, consumer-facing dimension to their business.
With billions of people worldwide using their services, these companies harness consumer data to strengthen their hold on market share even further. At the same time, this data is a double-edged sword, because these very businesses are also in the crosshairs to mishandle personal data.
Finally, these businesses all have a common tale of origin: they were created or incubated on the West Coast's fertile digital lands. Facebook may be the company that has the lowest claim to these roots, but it has also been based in Silicon Valley since June 2004.
