The old proverb, which was often ascribed to Benjamin Franklin, says so. Franklin, of course, lived in a time before electric lights when staying up late meant burning the oil at midnight and people had good reason to be occupied during daytime hours. Even so, at least when it comes to good prose, he might have been at something.
Centuries later, many of us have come to identify as early birds or even night owls with our homes illuminated not just by electric lights but also by the illumination of TVs, laptops and mobile devices. Early birds clock in at a decent hour, and in the first thing in the morning they can wake up refreshed. The night owls remain involved long past dark and only go to sleep.
