The goal of this research was to determine the prevalence, distribution of potential etiologies, and survival rates of maternal cardiopulmonary arrest for delivery during hospitalization in the United States.
Approximately 1 in 12,000 childbirth hospitalizations are caused by cardiac arrest, most often due to hemorrhage, heart failure, amniotic fluid embolism, or sepsis. Survival is dependent upon the etiology of the underlying arrest.
