According to OECD statistics, the strain of rising unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic was not equally experienced by countries in Europe and on the American continent. Within the OECD, Canada, Colombia and the U.S. witnessed an increase in unemployment of more than 8 percentage points. European countries including those hard hit by the epidemic saw less than 1 percent rise in unemployment.
Throughout the pandemic, participation in work training programs which are part of labor laws in many European nations was strong, according to a study released by the OECD on Tuesday. These schemes included 55 per cent of French based workers, 45 per cent of those in Switzerland, 45 per cent in Italy, 31 per cent in the UK and 30 per cent in Germany.
