The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced a further drop in unemployment for June on Thursday after a surprise work rise in May. Total non-farm private jobs in June grew 4.77 million, marking the second consecutive month of strong job growth. Although the White House was swift to celebrate those numbers, it is important to remember that only the historic job losses that followed them made the new job gains possible.

In June, overall non-farm jobs was still 13 million short of the overall in June last year and almost 15 million short of the pre-pandemic point as of February 2020.
