There is little question that for the 21st century, the town will be the dominant characteristic of human geography. Globally, 1.3 million people transfer every week to cities – and by 2040, a whopping 65 per cent of the world 's population will live in towns.
At the same time, 60 percent of global GDP is already accounted for by the 600 largest urban areas, and that will only rise as cities become larger and more affluent. Nonetheless, analysts predict that up to 80 per cent of potential economic development will occur in emerging regions alone in cities.
