America, Home to a brave nation, Free country, right? Okay, courageous or not, it's getting harder and harder for democracy to come through. The security price of the post-9/11 era is paid out not only in dollars (over $100 billion a year in anti-terrorism spending alone, by the way). No, the greatest price for protection is our freedom, or just the feeling that it exists. Here's a snapshot of some of the ways that making life in America a little easier has led us to become even less comfortable.
There was a time when hijacking of aircraft was a common concern for American travellers. Nearly 160 planes were hijacked between May 1961 and January 1973,(14) for a number of reasons, from ransom to just wanting to go somewhere else. But the key security issue in more recent decades, and particularly after 9/11, was terrorism.
