Last year, a $929 million grant for California's high-speed rail network was reported to be scrapped in a significant blow to US high-speed rail ambitions. In high-speed rail, the US already trails much of the developed world, lagging far behind China and Europe when it comes to kilometres of operational track.
China has made tremendous strides in constructing a high-speed rail network over the past 15 years , in line with its meteoric economic trajectory. According to UIC, The Worldwide Railway Organization, it had just over 35,000 km in service in February 2020 and this accounts for about two thirds of high-speed rail worldwide.
