In order to help cut plastic waste and raise recycling rates, Germany has been using a highly effective bottle deposit scheme since 2003. With customers inserting their glass bottles, plastic bottles or beer crates before a receipt is printed, a line of people in front of a deposit machine in a store is perfectly natural, allowing them to recoup their money at the checkout.
Each glass bottle currently carries a charge of eight hundred, while the plastic bottles are 25 cents. While the method has had the side effect of forcing vulnerable members of society to root through garbage bins in an effort to locate bottles to acquire a deposit, It has proven effective and several nations are attempting to imitate it.
