His lies are one of our enemy's most effective tools against us. Our enemy detests God's love and refuses it. He would make use of all means to keep us from seeing the love of God and from blinding us. Naturally, we would not be able to see the light (God) after we are blinded, but only the darkness wherever we are and whatever we do. The devil is still among us, remembering our shortcomings, our hardships, our remorse, our embarrassment and our judgment, and harping on them.
This is really normal, I'm pretty sure, and most likely is part of our everyday life. We always hear hisses from the pit, "You're worthless," "You always fail," "God wants to punish me," "God doesn't love me anymore," "You're always going to be like this," "You're never going to change for the better." Are you familiar with these things?
