Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31 each year, and on Saturday, October 31, Halloween 2020 will occur. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to fend off ghosts, originated the tradition. November 1 was appointed by Pope Gregory III in the eighth century as a period to remember all saints.

Soon, some of Samhain's rituals were adopted by All Saints Day. It was known as All Hallows Eve the evening before, and Halloween later. Halloween developed over time into a day of events such as trick-or-treating, jack-o-lantern carving, holiday parties, wearing costumes, and eating sweets.
