The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only known celestial object to support life. It is the most massive of the four terrestrial planets. The Earth's core is thought to contain solid iron with a radius of around 1,200 km (750 mi), whereas the rest of the globe is mostly silicate rock and ceramics. The Earth's outer surface is separated into many hard parts known as tectonic plates, which wander across the surface over millions of years.
The Earth is an incredible place. It's so massive that even travelling at the speed of light would take more than a year to circumnavigate it. It's so large that if you placed all of Earth's water into a container the size of a swimming pool, you'd have 1% of all the water on the planet. It's so massive that the sun seems like a speck in comparison. It's so massive that if you flew from New York to Tokyo and dropped a bomb from the plane, the bomb would still be travelling faster than the speed of sound when it landed. It's so massive that the entire globe could fit inside it. It's so massive that if you lined up all of the planets in the solar system, including Earth, you'd have trouble seeing it. It's so massive that if you lined up all the planets in the solar system, you'd have trouble seeing the sun. It's so massive that if you lined up all of the planets in the solar system, you'd have trouble seeing the nearest star. It's so massive that if you lined up all of the planets in the solar system, you'd have trouble seeing the next nearest star.
