When the first solar cell was created, solar panel efficiency was less than 1%. Selenium and a thin layer of gold plating were used by Charles Fritts to construct the first solar cell in 1883, according to this infographic from the guys at Solar Power Guide. Bell Labs scientists didn't create a silicon solar cell with a 6 percent efficiency until 1954. Hoffman Electronics upped the efficiency to 8% in 1957. Then, two years later, they raised it to 10%. The gains have been 17.8 percent, 24.1 percent, and 39.2 percent efficiency during the past several decades.
