Michael Phelps of the United States and Aleksandr Dityatin of the Soviet Union, both of whom won eight medals at their respective Olympics, are tied for the most medals won by an Olympian in a single Games. While Michael Phelps earned eight medals for swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, Alexander won eight for artistic gymnastics at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
