When did history's first prom take place? A male student at Amherst College wrote about a prom-like occasion for the first time in his notebook in 1894. He described receiving a unique invitation to a formal dance at the nearby all-female Smith College. But it's thought that prom-like gatherings have existed in America since the early 1800s. They began as lavish parties held by universities to flaunt wealth and privilege, as well as to give young men a chance to display their social standing and newly developed decorum. These soirees developed into the lavish occasions for dressing to impress that we know today over time.
