A Beginner's Guide to Eating with Chopsticks

Provided to you by:  Finedining lovers

I'll admit it: I'm not the best at using chopsticks. I'm actually not that good at them. But I've decided it's all right! Most people can benefit from a few straightforward suggestions, but you'll eventually discover your own way to put them to use.

Chopstick holding technique:

Hold one chopstick between your thumb and index finger, with the top of the chopstick resting on the pad of your thumb and the bottom part of the chopstick extending outwards.

Hold the second chopstick in the same way, but with it resting on your ring finger and little finger.

Move the second chopstick up and down by using your middle finger as a pivot, while keeping the first chopstick stationary. How to pick up food is as follows.

It may take some time to get the hang of it, but with practice, you will be able to use chopsticks with ease.

To eat with chopsticks, follow these steps:

Pick up the food: Use the chopsticks to gently pinch or grasp the food, making sure not to squeeze it too hard.

Bring the food to your mouth:

Keep the chopsticks parallel and close together as you bring the food to your mouth.

Take a bite:

Open your mouth wide and take a bite of the food.

Repeat:

Continue picking up food and bringing it to your mouth until you have finished eating.

Remember to not wave your chopsticks around, as this is considered impolite in some cultures. Also, refrain from sticking your chopsticks vertically into your food, as this resembles incense sticks used for funerary rituals.

Yes, that's correct. Using chopsticks is a skill that can be learned with practice, and everyone may develop their own unique style and technique. However, it is important to keep in mind the basic principles and etiquette when using chopsticks, as it can vary depending on the culture and context.
